"Make sure you have crossbars" 2009-08-10
By Brian N. Sorensen (Leavenworth, KS)
The carrier is great. No problems installing; just take your time. For some reason I don't understand, the Honda Odyssey does not come with crossbars. This was an additional $200 I was not expecting to use. So, the total cost for carrying items on top of the van was $550.

 "Solid carrier" 2009-07-10
By Stephen F. Ehrstein
Got it quickly and, once I tinkered a tiny bit, it installed quickly. It is capacious and fairly solid. I did notice a little sag in the middle between the two car-mounted support bars - perhaps they are too far apart for this carrier? When I restowed material it seemed better. Only dropped my mileage by about 2-3 mpg which is better than I expected.

"well constructed, not so easy to mount" 2008-11-10
By A. Laidlaw
The Thule seems to be well constructed and will last many years. The lift assist is handy. Mounting was more difficult than expected. Feeding the U bolts through the bottom was tricky, especially when you're balancing on the side of the vehicle.

"Fantastic, High Quality 5-Bike Rack" 2009-06-26
By S. Moder (Reston, Virginia)
I looked at various brands of bicycle racks at my local REI but after talking to several friends, decided to purchase a 5-bike Thule rack. I am very happy with my decision. It is a high quality rack and holds all of my family's bicycles. The price was significantly cheaper on Amazon.com, I was given free shipping, and it arrived in three days. We are very happy with our purchase.

 "Sturdy and well designed" 2009-05-16
By J. B. Gauthier
I purchased this rack in anticipation of a long Father & Sons weekend with my four teenage sons. We loaded 5 adult mountain bikes on this rack mounted on the hitch of a Denali XL. There was almost no assembly required and all the hardware was included as well as a wrench. Very easily mounted to the hitch with a screw-on approach, presumably to prevent rattling noises in the hitch receiver. Works like a charm. We drove over 200 miles each way with no worries whatsoever. Loading the 5 bikes was a bit of a challenge but it had more to do with the odd shaped frames of modern bikes. This being said, once we figured out the best order for loading the bikes on the rack, it was a breeze and the rubber straps work very well at securing the bikes on the rack. I used the provided strap to secure the bundle of bikes to the rack and it was great. No rattling, no motion that I could detect. This is definitely a very good unit and the mounts on the rack are very easy to slide / turn if necessary. Highly recommend it.

 "Works great!" 2008-10-05
By Glenn R. Sparks Jr. (cornfields of Illinois)
I purchased this carrier after extensive reading of the online reviews for all the different brands. I have a family of 5 and we needed a way to transport our bikes to the Apple Cider Century Bike Ride in Three Oaks, Michigan this past month. I found it easy to install and use. All 5 bikes fit on the rack on the back of my full-sized van and did not bounce or sway. I did decide to pad each bikes frame with a rag where it would touch another bike so that there would be no loss of paint. This did take a little bit more time , but I found the bikes in great condition after the 5 hour drive. I also would warn anyone to check ground clearance between the bottom of the lowest bike tire and the road. This could pose an issue if you back up or go across steep ditches with a low riding vehicle. I did use the enclosed strap to cinch the bottom of the bikes to eliminate swaying. It worked great. I noticed several Thules in the parking lot where 5000 riders began the race, as well as many other brands. The Thule seemed easiest to use among all that i saw. It reaffirmed my choice was a good one. Since Thule is also a reputable name, I can be assured of replacement parts should the need arise. My only difficulty was with my daughters bike. I had to buy a $32 adapter to extend from the seat post to the handle bars, for it to fit on the rack, since the bike rests on the frame cross bar found on all men's bikes. The ability to flip a lever and get into the back of my van without removing the bikes was great. So after 10+ hours of driving everything from Interstates to county roads to grave roads and private drives I can say that I have given it a tough test and it has passed. Great product

"Well Built - Easy to use" 2008-07-17
By Sharonie (Chesterfield, VA)
This is a well-built bike rack. Heavy, but not so heavy that this 5' 4" female can't handle it by myself. I have only used it for "1" bike so far, but feel it should easily accomodate 5 with a little "creativity." (based on previous reviews).

 "Overpackers Rejoice!" 2009-07-11
By M. Warren (The Derby City)
Have owned a Thule roof rack for years and always attached it to our Jeep's existing roof rack. However, we sold the jeep last summer and were disappointed to learn that our new car's roof rack did not come with the cross bars. We purchased the Thule cross bars, foot pack, and locks and loaded up our car for the Jersey shore. Worked like a charm. Installation was easy; the biggest issue was moving the feet in tandom to get everything even (the existing bars were curved to contour the car). In a nutshell: my husband didn't work too long at the installation and any complaining was minimal (if any) so, for us, that is a success story! Upon our return from vacation, I wondered if the locks were really necessary given how weighted down the Thule was with luggage; however, better safe than sorry and it was nice not having to worry about one more thing that could go wrong! Worth the money.

"Locks to protect your base system" 2009-04-12
By Vikram Rawat (carlsbad, ca)
What else to say - Thule doesn't provides it as part of the system. They sell them as add-ons for obvious reasons to make money.

If you are putting money into their expensive base system; you will obviously fear of getting it stolen and will be motivated or fearful enough to buy the locks.

So, I bought the locks and had to use little pressure and mechanical sleight of hand to fit them.

I bet, after a tiring, struggling and brainy (if you are not mechanically inclined) installation of the whole system, no-one would ever be willing to take off their rack systems; Only time I see them taking them off is when I need to dispose them off.

 "Thule Stacker" 2009-08-11
By John S. Vining (Fiddletown, CA)
Although not the most ideal means to transport your kayak, it sure is a lower cost alternative to the high dollar options. The Thule 830 Stacker fits onto virtually all roof racks; Thule, Yakima as well as most factory. I purchased this one to fit on the factory rack of my 2006 Toyota Highlander and was not disapointed.

The quality of material and craftsmanship is subpurb. The instructions were clearly written and the diagrams were large enough and easy to transition words to pictures.

The rack was installed in less than half an hour and if you have good strong hand grip, no tools necessary; although I would recommend that you take at least one turn with the aid of a pair of plyers just to ensure that the rack does not slip. If you are going to put this on a set of Yakima round load bars you will definately need to use plyers as I found out when I transfered the stacker to the Yakima bars on my pick up truck. Even after tightening with plyers the racks can be rotated front to back, not so on my Toyota; and I have no experience with the square Thule bars.

I really like the idea of being able to lay the rack flat on top of the roof when not in use. The previous rack that I had stuck up like a mohawak hair cut. So, if I didn't want to look at it I had to remove the entire rack, then re-install it for the next trip. With the Thule 830 you just loosen one nob and lay it down.

The only draw back to this rack is not in the design or the quality, it's in the actual loading of the kayak on top of your vehicle; the boat has to be transported on one of the side edges. Manuvering the boat into a vertical position can be a bit daunting by yourself, but it can be done. Better if you have a helper though to keep it stable until you can get the first strap in place.

Speaking of straps, the ones that come with the Thule are EXCELLENT! The buckle holds fast and the padded cover for the metal does not cause damage to your boat or car unless you are very careless. The fore and aft rope/hook lines are the absolute BEST. The old strap type that came with with my Yakima system always fluttered, made noise and in one instance wore the paint on my vehicle. Not so with the Thule rope style. The fastening device automatically ratchets secure and even after traveling 700 miles in one trip did not come loose.

Securing your kayak to the rack can be a hit and miss proposition. I tried the suggested tie down method that came with the instructions but was a bit doubtful as to the side strength of the rack when hauling only 1 kayak. I am sure that this has been tested by Thule, just me trying to over engineer everything. Anyway I did use the suggested method on one trip, but I found that the side of the kayak resting on the bars "walked" away from the rack 2-3 inches; part of the trip was in high cross winds and I guess I could have tightened the straps more. This trip, however, prompted me to devise my own strapping method which involves a loop around the base of the Thule rack, under the downside edge of the kayak, over the top to the rack. This method I found to keep my boat in place with no lateral travel.

If you are going to haul 2 boats you may wish to purchase a second set of fore/aft ropes, or you will have to devise a way to loop the nose & tail of both with one. You can get by with the single set of straps, but a second set may be more to your liking as well. Securing 2 boats was a bit more of a challenge, but once completed was as secure as hauling a single. What I did was mount the first boat and secured with the Thule recommended method using 1 strap. Then after the second boat was on top of the car I tied both boats together at the second tower, then removed the first strap on the first boat and repeated the double tie. Vola!! Ready to roll.

In conclusion, if you need to haul 2 kayaks and don't have the roof space, or the cash to buy 2 mounts to put them side by side, I highly recommend the Thule 830 Stacker, you won't be disapointed.

 "Worked great!" 2009-07-13

I bought this for a 500+ mile drive to Minnesota and we had two kayaks (11' and 15') strapped down to it and it worked beautifully! I would recommend buying an extra set of the pulley cords though because those were really handy! It can be done without them but on my next trip I will definitely be buying some more of those! Overall, the carrier worked great! It did everything it promised!

"works great, kayaks stay on" 2008-10-21
By pv (va)
Just FYI, you can put two kayaks on with only one rack, as long as you buy some extra straps for the second boat. I bought two, since we have two kayaks, but only needed one. That said, I did need the second set of straps, ropes, and hooks. When we eventually buy two more boats (total of 4), I will only need to buy some extra straps and we will be all set.

 "Thule 830 kayak carrier" 2008-09-17
By Bernard E. Bradley
This is a good deal for someone wanting to carry a couple of Kayaks, without spending a small fortune.

The only problem was, the instructions were a little vague, and no pictures to guide you. There are drawings, but leave a lot to be desired.

They claim you can carry four kayaks, but until I see a picture of how to do this, I would only carry two.

Still, it is a good deal to take your kayaks to the water.

I'm glad I made the purchase, and the dealer was great, and the price is reasonable

"Outstanding, solid, easy to install" 2009-08-17
By A. Davis (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I got this rack when I got a new (small) SUV, and the old trunk-mounted bike rack wasn't compatible. We wanted something a lot sturdier anyway, and this is definitely it. I have complete confidence in the Thule brand -- we didn't even consider another. And this particular rack is the one that works well for us. It's easy to install and remove, and it's very easy to mount your bikes. A couple of well-placed levers make it easy to fold the rack section down when not in use and to slant the whole device back (without the bikes mounted) so you can open the hatch of the SUV. (You can buy longer hitches that keep the bikes farther away from the back of the vehicle if you have a larger SUV.) This is a solid piece of equipment. I did two hours of highway driving with the bikes secured to the rack -- they didn't move! No wobbling, no wheel spinning -- nada! I feel very secure with this rack, and of course, love the fact that we don't have to deal with the inconvenience of a roof rack.

Bear in mind that you need to have a trailer hitch. And if you're going to be leaving your bikes unattended for any length of time, I would definitely recommend locks for the bikes AND for the rack. It's so easy to remove the rack, that a thief could very easily take it and the bikes with very little effort.

This bike rack is a very good buy. It's very stable and is built solid. The rubber straps that hold the bike down don't seem cheap and seem like they will last for a while. The rubber that the bike sits on is soft and wont scratch your paint.

The bikes sway when you drive and the front wheel turns. To counter that there is a cinch strap that comes with it and I strap the crank to the rack and then take the excess and tie the front wheel off and stick the excess in the trunk door. I took an old inner tube and wrapped it around the vertical part of the rack so the pedal doesn't scratch the paint.

2 bike version mounted to a 2002 Focus ZX3 in a 1 1/4" hitch. Works well enough to transport my bikes without having to remove any wheels. The lower folding portion does make hatch opening easier. I chose the Roadway for the folding top portion. This great when the rack is on your car but no bike is being carried, it folds down improving clearance and doesn't look as funky. The receiver post is on the long side for my car but the designed length is probably that way for more universal fitment. I swear a car behind me at a stop light is going to run into the up-post someday. As much as I don't like reflective stuff, some 3M reflective tape on the lower end of the up-post might be a good idea. The included strap works fine but I opted for the Thule plastic sway cages. The strap is being used to keep the front wheel form moving side to side. The Thule snug tight 2 lock works well.

I suggest using anti-seize on whatever bolt/locking pin you use to install this. Also make sure you use some sort of lube on the receiver tube and post to prevent corrosion which could lock the rack into the receiver.

Best bike item I've bought yet......besides my bike.

Just used it this past weekend. Worked great. Bike stays stable, even at reasonably high freeway speeds. It's good if you place the bike's center of gravity over the centerline of the rack, so it's balanced on the rack.

I would have given 5 stars, but I was missing a few parts in the box. An e-mail to Hollywood racks took care of that. Replacement parts were received in the mail within a week.

"Good rack, thumb screw vibrates loose" 2009-07-07
By Georgia Girl (South Georgia, USA)
I found the Hollywood rack for 2 bikes to be more stable than any type of racks that you hang your bike on that I have tried. I had two ladies bikes on the rack and we didn't have to buy anything extra to secure them on the rack properly. You just ratchet down the security hooks and it has got them. The thumb screw that is used to make the rack even more stable is a good idea, but it does become loose from the slight vibration of the rack. Just to make sure that I didn't lose it, I checked it frequently when I stopped. If anyone has any ideas to keep this from happening, please share. The velcro straps are great! They put that extra security on the tires. Another pro is that I could put the center post down and load and unload my camping gear out of my SUV. Overall, I am very pleased with this rack. I drove approx. 1000 miles and the bikes stayed very secure and in place. We didn't get a scratch on them, as they never touched.

We have both mountain and road bikes. We also have two vehicles, one with a 1.25" receiver and one with a 2" receiver. In the past, the vehicle with the 1.25" receiver, a PT Cruiser, didn't carry our full suspension mountain bikes without a lot of fuss. The pickup with a 2" receiver wasn't much better. With the Hollywood Rack we are able to easy load them on to either vehicle. We now have confidence that nothing will happen while in transport. The rack works equally well with our road bikes. The front wheel turning is now a thing of the past. The price seemed much better than a Yakima or Tule rack of similar style. Very happy with the rack.

 "Nice rack...haha" 2009-05-26
By J. Green (IA, USA)
I own a recumbent bike which is the specific reason I chose this carrier. It's easy to assemble easy to attach to the car, the anti-rattle bolt is a nice touch. It's also relatively easy to put bikes on it. My recumbent is a short wheel base, but this rack should take up to 60" or so without trouble. With 2 bikes on, it does wobble some going over bumps, it makes me worry but it always looks great when I get to my trail and get out to check it.

My only serious detractor is one of the safety cables that keeps the pins with the rack was cut from the factory and the shipping carton was in extremely rough shape.

"My Bikes Fell Off and Dragged Down the Highway" 2009-06-06
By C. Bush
Do NOT trust the rubber straps to hold your bike on! I had 2 bikes both on the front of the rack as I was supposed to. I strapped them in very tight and put the blue cable around them for extra security. Plus, I had a bike lock wrapped around both of the frames. I wasn't on the highway for 10 minutes when one of the bikes popped off. Luckily it was strapped tightly to both the rack and the other bike so it dragged behind my car until I could get off the highway. I'm in the process of making a warranty claim to Thule so they can fix the damages to my bike. So far their claim rep has been nice but doesn't seem to think that they're going to pay for anything. My only shot is that there is a small fray in one of the rubber straps.

Overall, I actually really like the rack. The lesson that I learned is that I need to use lots of extra straps to make sure the bikes can't move AT ALL. Also, I wouldn't recommend using this rack with a car, even if you have a hitch. The weight of the bikes pushes the shocks down so the bikes bounce around a lot more.

 "Good Bike Rack" 2009-05-17

This rack works as advertised although with some (ladies) bikes it's a tight fit getting the bike frame on the rubber mountings. It was easy to install. The rack mounts far enough away from the car that on a Lexus SUV, you can still open the rear hatch without tilting the bike rack. Also, if you need a tailer hitch, take a look at U-Haul. They have custom hitches for many cars that simply bolt on (without having to remove anything from the car). Much cheaper than what local repair shops quoted to adapt a generic hitch.

 "Beautiful Product" 2009-04-18

Great product as advertised. My only disappointment is that you can't use a standard hitch pin or lock. This means you have to take it off when not in use and want to make sure it does not get stolen.

 "Great product, but..." 2008-11-16

Great product. However when usually I receive stuff from Amazon, they always arrive in perfect condition. Not this one, it was pretty scratched up and almost looked like used. Since this is heavy and lot of effort to return, decided to keep it.

 "Excellent buy!" 2008-10-19

I was unsure if this would work on my vehicle but it attached to the receiver hitch perfectly and works great. I have a Suzuki Grand Vitara and even though I cannot open the back door all the way I can open it about half way and still have access to the back of my vehicle. Bikes load easily and ride great. I haven't taken it off the back because of the ease of getting in and out with the ease of dropping the bike rack down. The only thing is that you do have to take the bike(s) off before you can do that.
