 "Great family bike rack" 2009-06-27
By Mommy to 2 Monkeys
Just wanted to add to the other reviews that this rack can carry our 4 family bikes: my husband's mountain bike, my petite women's bike, my kids' 20" and 16" bikes. Pretty easy to lash them on and take off in a jiffy!

 "Great Rack" 2008-09-29
By Dad of 3 (Central PA)
We have owned this rack for 2 years. We have Honda Odyssey. The reason we chose this rack over the Thule swing out version was because the bottom of the rack is elevated from the hitch (not straight out of reciever). This is important on a lower (non-SUV) vehicle. I've never scraped the hitch on any sharp inclines.

The rack is very solid. No problem to have 4 bikes on the rack and still swing it out of the way (I don't think that Yakima reccomends this....but it works just fine on ours). Only draw back I've found is the shear weight of the rack (50-60 lbs.). Makes removal and storage (I hang ours up) a little difficult. However, it's a great rack.

"Great rack, litttle heavy, but well worth it." 2007-04-13
By Coderpitt (Texas)
I purchased the rack a couple of months ago and I've been very happy with it. It holds the bikes a little higher than I would like, but that provides clearance on inclines. The main reason that I went with this is that I wanted my wife to be able to access the back hatch on our Montero Sport without having to worry about her 120 lb self dropping everyone's bike or having to take it off. She has no problem at all moving the bikes out of the way and it securely holds the bikes. One thing to consider with this purchas is the 9' yakima cable lock to lace through the tires to prevent tire theft. With the SKS system, all of the keys can be setup to match, so you can have a cargo carrier, bike lock, bike rack, hitch pin lock and whatever else all with one key. It's well worth the money.

 "Bike Rack" 2006-02-23
By Gary L. Phillips (Orlando, FL USA)
This is a very good product. It swings out of the way - even when loaded with bikes - allowing me access to the bed area of my Tahoe. It folds down nicely, allowing me to park in my garage without removing the rack from the truck. On the downside, it is pretty expensive and it is fairly difficult to get the rack mounted on the truck. However, I am not aware of a better bike rack (at any price) intended for use with an SUV with swing-out (i.e. not swing-down) tail gates.

 "Awesome Bike Rack!" 2008-11-11
By Southern Bella Sam (Zachary, LA USA)
Great 4-bike rack at a great price. Light enough for me to easily put on and off by myself, as a 47 year old woman, but very sturdy. Easy to snug bikes up, anti-sway works well. I can even open my back hatch on my Lexus 330, without hitting it. Get a pad lock to replace the Carter key, and it is secured to your hitch. But you still need to lock your bikes onto the rack with a cable, if you leave them. Excellent product!

"Good buy for the money" 2009-01-06
By M. Rutledge
The good: This rack works exactly as advertised. It's all steel and will certainly last many years. The price is the most attractive feature. This is a fraction the cost of the popular name units and performs just as well.

The bad: The thing is heavy. Really heavy. Don't forget to regularly check the tightness of nuts and bolts. A few more lock washers or nylock nuts might be a nice addition. The hitch piece needs to be a couple inches longer to clear the spare tire of a land rover discovery. (Or buy a small hitch extender.) It fits my pickup fine.

The ugly: Some of the welds look a little rough. Nothing that would compromise the ability to carry a few bikes, but it's certainly not perfect. The powder coat finish isn't the most durable. After a couple summers riding on the back of the wifes land rover it looks a bit faded and scratched.

For the price, I would certainly buy it again if I ever need to replace it.

 "Change from older model." 2009-07-06
By Rick (Bloomington, MN USA)
I have had one of these for a number of years. When I purchased it, it came with completely separate parts for both the 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers. No adapter needed for the 2". Now, it looks like it is basically the 1-1/4" model with a shim for the 2" receiver. My old vehicle was 2", now I have a 1-1/4" receiver. My problem now is that I am trying to track down parts so that it will work with the smaller receiver. [...] Now, the Saris site is displayed. For me, it has been a solid unit, but I do agree with the comments on the straps. I bungee everything and it works fine.

 "Nice for the price" 2008-08-27
By MLipenk (MN)
I have owned this Graber bike rack for about 5 years now. My wife picked one up from our local Target store for my birthday one year. In the 5 years it has traveled thousands of miles between the states of Wis., MN, and ND with not so much as a hiccup. I have carried 4 bikes on it, including 2 adult and 2 kids bikes.

One of the kids bikes is oddly shaped yet still fits fine (20"). One of the kids bikes is an 16" and works as well. It is a bit of a stretch to get any bike on the spot between the rack and the vehicle. I usually put the smallest bike back there.

I have had vehicles with both a 1 1/4" receiver and a 2" receiver. If you use the included threaded pin with the tightening shim, there is next to no wobble with either configuration, even with the plastic 2" adapter. The shim goes inside the square pipe of the bike rack. Then when you insert the pin with the threads near the head, through the receiver and the bike rack tube and the shim bolt, and ratchet it down tight, everything becomes nice and snug. I have to wonder if other reviewers correctly used the shim or if they are using the shim at all.

I also like the fact that this rack folds down and allows you to get into the back of your vehicle. A lot of racks in this price range do not have that feature. You can also easily fold down the horizontal bars that hold the bikes for more compact storage in your garage. The straps also work fine, although the little nubs that hold the straps do tend to mis-shape a little bit. However, I have never had one unstrap by itself in the 5 years I've had it.

Yes you can get fancier, more refined bike racks from Thule or Yakima and others, but you will also pay an arm and a leg. I agree with one reviewer that the large tube construction seems like over-kill and adds a lot of weight, but this Graber is also SOLID and yet won't break your budget. This Graber has given me no reason to look elsewhere for another rack, nor consider upgrading. I have been happy with it.

"Heed the warnings when using with 2 inch Hitch " 2008-06-27
By Young (San Jose, CA, USA)
Bought this product based on price and review, thinking that the "sway" problem is due to wrong installation, and not with the product. I was wrong. I have 2 inch Hitch, and using the included plastic adapter, and the retaining pin that tightens with a screw on the other side (which is a hack in itself), I loaded up two adult and two childrens bikes. Initial sway was concerning but not enough to stop the trip. The sway increased over 300 mile trip to about 0.5 foot left and right (total play of 1 foot), and increased to 1.5 feet total on the return trip. All the sway action eroded the inside groove of the plastic adapter. I have a Cadillac Escalade (same as GMC, Chevy, etc) factory 2 inch hitch. Perhaps people who reported no or little sway problem with 2 inch adapter have different mechanicals that helps the situation (longer overlap perhaps between the 2 inch rack and the hitch mount insertion... I am guessing at this point). I am returning this to the target store (or gift it to a friend w/ 1.25 inch hitch, if they don't take it back).

Aside from this glaring 2 inch hitch adapter problem:

Pro:

1. Built Solid - The whole rack and bikes are secure together -- the sway probelms is at the hitch mount for the whole package.

2. Up to three bikes could be carried far enough out from the back of the car to be concerned about scratching the finish. The fourth one mounted near the car should be secured with bunge cords to the other bikes to keep it away from the car.

3. Even with four bikes, I had access to the rear loading window (push out a handle bar a bit).

4. The retaining straps worked well (I understand the perception of flimsiness), but had no issues on mine. The weight of the bikes keeps the bike in place in the groove, and strap is there to position them.

5. Price - Good price and good product -- had I have 1.25 inch Hitch.

Con:

1. 2. 3. Sway problem with 2 inch Hitch.

4. The horizontal bars (where bikes rest) are secured with big hand-tightening screw/handle combo w/ no locking washiers, etc. I could imagin that if I am not mindful of this and tighten it occationally, bikes could fall off.

Well, I researched for the replacement, and found Softride 25863 Access Dura 2. It is 2.5 time the cost ($246.37 from Amazon), but it is better than any other one I've seen, with vertical tilt down for a full rear access of the car/truck. Should have bought that in the first place.

By A. Rodriguez (Macon, GA)

Customer Buzz
"Wobbly with poor security for bikes" 2007-05-13
By Swabbie (Georgia)
I received this rack as a gift, so I didn't get to evaluate it before purchase. I have a 2" hitch receiver. The included 2" adapter is worthless, wobbly, and unstable. The reason is the use of nylon and loose tolerance in the adapter. Had to buy a steel adapter that fit from another vendor. Don't trust the included cheap plastic bike straps unless you want to risk losing your bikes to following traffic. Use plently of tiedowns that you provide yourself. The horizonal bars that hold the bikes are attached to the upright pipe by screw knobs that are only hand-tightened and can back out. The upright pipe is the one thing that is over-engineered and more sturdy than needed. I would strongly recommend a potential purchaser spend more money for a better carrier. It might be OK for taking a kid's bike to a neighborhood park, but that's about it.

 "Good for price, but........" 2008-03-17
By B. Arnholt (Blue Ridge, VA USA)
I bought this bike rack to replace a worn-up Performance bike rack. It is sturdy, and well constructed. The bike cradles are easy to use. However, like most, it doesn't fit non-standard bikes. Overall this is a good unit for the money, BUT, it sways more than I'd like. So, I will have to purchase an anti-sway accessory and cross-bar adapters which makes the price less attractive.

 "Everything I Expected" 2007-08-19
By G. Pergande
This rack is pretty much just everthing I expected of of a bike rack as it's very rugged and easy to use. We have a mini van and a very nice feature is you can swing the rack down while it's loaded to open the tailgate and access the back. We did need to purchase one of the bike cross bars to be able to attach one of my sons bikes that was to thick to fit the rack. I would recamend buying the anti-sway bar. I didn't and ended up buying localy. It keeps to rack from swaying side to side when driving and is pretty much a matter of preference if it bothers you as I don't see any safety problem if you don't use one.

"Good, but could be better." 2007-05-13
By GT XCR3000 (UT)
Swagman's claim on this rack is that it:

"provides the ultimate in flexibility to accommodate a variety of bike frame designs"

So I figured I'd spend a little extra $$ on the rack and avoid buying a bunch of crossbars. Unfortunately, the rotating cradles are so big that quite a few bikes (including my GT XCR) start having trouble fitting into them without quite a bit of twisting and pushing, on top of that pretty much render crossbars useless.

It is a good rack but I'd recommend getting the non-rotating cradles if you really want more flexibility in the bikes it can accommodate.

"Sturdy bike carrier, but not quite as stable as one might like" 2008-11-28
By Charles Gounaud (Dallas, TX USA)
We bought this 4 bike carrier to use on our Jeep Wrangler (which, of course, has a rear-mounted spare tire).

Overall the rack is very good. The J-shaped mounting bar has ample automobile clearance - even from large off road spare tires. In my opinion, though, the large horizontal and vertical distance from the rear of the vehicle to the bikes on the rack creates a bit more on-road sway than is necessary.

As a work-around, I secure a nylon strap (left over from an old weed trimmer) between the spare tire and the rack to eliminate in-motion sway.

Again, a very good value for the price - just one small issue that is relatively easy to remedy.

"Rubber is cheap and breaks down" 2008-07-07
By J. Phoenix
The contstruction and ease of use is very good with a pickup truck. Loved it for the first few years. However, the rubber material that the tube frame of the bike actually rests on does not hold up. I've had mine for a few years but really haven't used it that much and the rubber loops where the straps go through are all coming off. This will eventually lead to the inability to secure the bikes.

Excellent - performs as advertised. The flip side feature works great - the deadbolt and lock work as advertised. 2 areas for improvement: Need a strap for the front wheel to secure it (I use a bungee). And there is a little wiggle in rack - but overall it is very secure. A good product

"Will not work on a 2006 Rav 4 or hold 4 bikes." 2009-08-12
By Sue (Pittsburgh)
While the Flipside looks like it would be a good solution for a side opening back door, it did not work on our 2006 Rav 4. When the post was flipped to the side, it was still not low enough for the door to clear the support post. Both Amazon and Yakima failed to provide this dimension, although all of the product sketches suggest that it might work. Unfotunately, I forgot to record the height to share here.

Return costs ran about $24, in addition to losing our original shipping costs.

After purchasing the Yakima Swing Daddy, we have also found that fitting 4 bikes on the rack is probably not possible. In addition, the large arms of the rack do not work well with some bike styles. Built in bike lock also adds additional width to the arms, and easily scratches bikes.

Positive points - nice styling, easy assembly, appears sturdy.

"bad engineering and quality control" 2008-05-10
By Cheng S. Chan (Portland, OR USA)
I bought a Thule Ridgeline in April. Three weeks later I found inside of one tubing was holding lots of water and got rusted severely. Water came in from where the locking cable was positioned when it was folded. In addition, the other end didn't have a drain hole to let go the water. I was concerned this rack wouldn't last, and returned it for an exchange.

This time I was recommended to give Yakima Flipside a try. I took the rack home, opened the box. The first thing I noticed was the locking cable was hanging out and would not go all the way back to the storage compartment. I spent about 10 minutes, and couldn't figure out how to return the cable back in. Then I un-folded the two arms, found they would NOT get in lock-in position without some work. Played with it for another few minutes, and found the bottom cap of the rack didn't even have a locking screw. It was just snapped on.

Comparing both rack, I really liked the Thule design over Yakima Flipside. I went back and got another new Thule Ridgeline instead.

I think I'll have to live with the water in the tube problem. I may just cut off a small zip bag, and use a tie to wrap the bag on top of the tube where the lock is positioned to prevent water to go in.

"Well built but very heavy..." 2008-03-29
By Papoose
This bike rack is finished very nicely with very few exposed nuts and bolts. It comes with anti-sway supports that fold down and attach to the vertical seat post tube on your bike and keep the bike from rocking back and forth while traveling.

It is also very well built but it has a few flaws that are worth mentioning. The integrated locking cable would be handy but it was VERY difficult to stuff back into its storage compartment (located in the vertical support arm) but your mileage may vary. The cable felt like it was longer than its storage space so much pushing and twisting was needed to put it back.

The rack is also very large and VERY heavy, much more so than would appear in the pictures. This could make it a bit awkward to install on your vehicle but it should be very sturdy because it uses a threaded bolt to attach itself to the hitch.

I also noticed that the provided lock for the hitch bolt wouldn't engage if the safety pin was in place. It works fine without the pin but installing the cotter pin doesn't provide enough surface for the lock to grip onto apparently. This could just be a flaw with the one I had so you might have better luck.

I never actually tested this rack with a bike because I wasn't able to install it on my car. The part that goes into the receiver hitch was too long for the hitch on my Honda so the locking bolt holes wouldn't line up. The Thule Ridgeline appears to be very similar to this model (and hopefully has a shorter hitch mount =).
