 "Great Bikerack." 2009-07-16
By Donald Nelson (Whitefish, Montana)
This is my second Swagman bike rack. Simply put they are strong as an ox and simple as simple can be. No muss or fuss right out of the box. Built like a brick, perhaps a bit heavy but that help them ride solid in the hitch mount. I recommend the swagman products as first class.

 "Works well after modification" 2009-09-07
By James E. Kestel
Bike rack works very well with some modifications. I put the rack on the back of a 36' 5th wheel camper, it tends to get a lot of bounce with 5 bikes. I did away with the pin that lets it fold down and made it a rigid assembly, drilled an extra hole in the receiver, welded 5/8 washers to the side of the bike receiver where the pins go to get rid of the play, so I could bolt the receiver tight to the vehicle receiver.

I did have some difficulties initially trying to put the bikes on the rack. I had to use some of the bike seat posts to attach to the bike rack, if they could only make frames the same on the bikes, or is there another bracket that would help in this situation?

We just got back from a trip, and worked well after everything.

"How could it be improved? It can't" 2009-06-17
By Matthew (Tx)
I have owned 2 bike racks. One was not worth anything, the other was difficult to use. This is the perfect rack.

1) Five bikes, few others do this.

2) The cradles are adjustable on angle with initial setup. This is the definitive factor! If you've never used a rack try to put bikes of different size and style if you don't have this feature. Just try...

3) The cradles are well designed, padded great, and can accommodate a large range of frame.

4) It folds down which is huge if you use a locking pin.

This is one of the best designed products I have used in a long time.

 "pretty darn good!" 2008-10-10
By Jorge Kruger (NC, USA)
I needed a 5 bicycle rack that could handle all our family bikes, including our 3 children's (5, 7 and 10 yrs. old) for our yearly vacation. This one seemed to be pretty versatile, not requiring additional bars for most bikes.

While it took some work to make all bikes fit just right (especially the little ones), we made the 4 hour trip to the mountains just fine; no excessive movement (though it does sway a little), no damage to the bicycles (I used pipe insulating foam tube pieces in a couple of spots where bikes rubbed each other) and an overall uneventful trip, even on some not-so-smooth roads. Getting the kids' bikes on was kinda tricky (the littlest one had to travel upside down!) but it worked out fine--I don't think it would have been so with some of the other 2-bar models.

However, if I had to load all 5 bikes on a regular basis I'd probably be looking for a different option. Also, something this rack (and most others too) could use is some kind of reflective finish on the end of the tube... can never be too safe!

 "Really nice rack!!!" 2007-10-13
By R. J. Haupert (Zimmerman, MN USA)
I really like this rack, it fits nicely on the back of my Dodge Grand Caravan. The rack is made of high quality items and is worth the money.

A couple of suggestions for improvement would be to, first, make all the bike holders locking, instead of just the one at the end. Second, some provision for mounting extra lights to the rack would be useful, since five bikes do tend to block your tail-lights. I'm planning on jury-rigging something to my rack.

 "Not Bad" 2009-02-03
By M. S. (Orlando, FL.)
Does not seem to be too bad of a bike hitch.

PROS: Sturdy, assembles easily and versatile.

CONS: Could be a bit heavy/awkward for some women. Pain in the rear for oddly shaped frames such as woman's/girl's style bikes.

I had to rotate the mounts to odd angles (one almost upside down) to be able to fit the bikes securely. Due to the size (for strength/security) of the mounts, it makes it difficult to slide the bike onto the mounts as intended especialy if the bike has an odd shaped frame. The best bikes to use with this hitch would be of a simplistic design that has a strait top tube (Top section of frame that runs from seat post to goose neck) or one that you can frame adapter on.

Overall this seems to be a good quality carrier.

"Definitely not 'ultimate in flexibility'" 2008-05-24
By me (west coast)
I have bought this hitch for our dual suspension bikes and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Cradles seemed functional at first but when we took the bikes to the trip to Moab which involved quite a bit of rough dirt roads, fine dust got everywhere, rubber padding started loosing grip and bikes moved in all directions resulting in quite a bit of damage (scratches and worse, cable to rear derailer on one bike got almost destroyed). 'Kraton vinyl cusioning' on both cradles suffered quite a lot of damage and in one case detached from the metal piece.

I would definitely disagree with claims that (1) loading and unloading is very fast [it is not] and (2) rotation allows for greater ground clearance [if you need ground clearance, this hitch is not your best choice because the rack is not all that high at the first place].

I have swapped this rack for another model (XPORT Slipstream 3-Bike Dual-Receiver Hitch Rack) with U shaped fork because two support points and higher ground clearance.

 "Buyer beware!" 2007-03-29
By Dissatisfied (CT)
I used this 3 bike rack for less than 2 years with just 2 bikes mounted. There was so much play at the fold-down pin that the stem broke at the pin insert point. Fortunately there was still enough material for the rack to stay upright, but it could have folded down during transport, destroying both bikes and creating a traffic safety hazard. Swagman would not reply to our customer service inquiries.

 "Great rack!" 2006-08-09
By R. French (Texas)
This is the third bike rack my wife and I have tried and for once a pleasant surprise. I own a Jeep Liberty with the spare tire mounted on the back. Most hitch mounted bike racks require you to purchase a hitch extension costing between $30 and $70 dollars to clear the spare. The mounting tube on this rack has two pre-drilled positions, one for clearing a spare, and one for bringing the rack closer if you don't have a rear mounted spare. Needless to say I was pleased not having to spend the extra money for the extension.

This is also a well built rack, not flimsy like many similarly priced racks I have seen. There is no need to provide extra stability with straps etc. to keep it from twisting.

This rack provides quite a bit of security as well. A locking pin is provided for attaching the section that swivels to the section mounted to the hitch, and one of the three mounting brackets has a locking knob.

Finally, the single tube design is a lot more adaptable than the racks that have two arms for holding the bike. We bought a Thule spare tire mounted rack for my wife's Jeep, and while it is a nice rack, we had a really rough time getting the frames of our mountain bikes to clear the two support arms. With the Swagman, it is no problem, much easier to load and unload. You can rest assured you will get your money's worth with this rack.

Seems to be a good rack though it does sway a lot. so much that i bought the other piece to stablize it which adds to the price. also, just FYI, i cannot fit my 4runner in the garage with the rack attached to the car, or i should say i can't close my garage door. just something to think about before buying as that thought never entered my mind.:)

 "Good for price, but........" 2008-03-17
By B. Arnholt (Blue Ridge, VA USA)
I bought this bike rack to replace a worn-up Performance bike rack. It is sturdy, and well constructed. The bike cradles are easy to use. However, like most, it doesn't fit non-standard bikes. Overall this is a good unit for the money, BUT, it sways more than I'd like. So, I will have to purchase an anti-sway accessory and cross-bar adapters which makes the price less attractive.

 "Everything I Expected" 2007-08-19
By G. Pergande
This rack is pretty much just everthing I expected of of a bike rack as it's very rugged and easy to use. We have a mini van and a very nice feature is you can swing the rack down while it's loaded to open the tailgate and access the back. We did need to purchase one of the bike cross bars to be able to attach one of my sons bikes that was to thick to fit the rack. I would recamend buying the anti-sway bar. I didn't and ended up buying localy. It keeps to rack from swaying side to side when driving and is pretty much a matter of preference if it bothers you as I don't see any safety problem if you don't use one.

"Good, but could be better." 2007-05-13
By GT XCR3000 (UT)
Swagman's claim on this rack is that it:

"provides the ultimate in flexibility to accommodate a variety of bike frame designs"

So I figured I'd spend a little extra $$ on the rack and avoid buying a bunch of crossbars. Unfortunately, the rotating cradles are so big that quite a few bikes (including my GT XCR) start having trouble fitting into them without quite a bit of twisting and pushing, on top of that pretty much render crossbars useless.

It is a good rack but I'd recommend getting the non-rotating cradles if you really want more flexibility in the bikes it can accommodate.

"Not made for heavy bikes and bumpy roads" 2009-08-02
By J. Dion Bates
I've had my Swagman for several years now, and it had worked well. I loaded it w/ 4 bikes behind my camper (behind, not in front - didn't like doing it that way). The weight and the bounce was too much, and the frame cracked at the base. I had that welded, and thought I was good. Then, the tubular shaft bent at the base (just above where it has the 2 holes for the pins.) Unhappy camper. It worked well for me for years with a couple of bikes, but when I loaded it w/ four bikes (130 pounds) and added the bumps of a 3000-mile trip, it was too much.

 "Great, versatile bike rack" 2009-07-20
By E. clifford (Southern, CA USA)
This bike rack worked great driving hundreds of miles to the Mountains. It held the bikes firmly. We had the SUV packed so tight I could not see out the back window. But after stopping several times, to double-check things, it was quite evident the bikes were safely and firmly in place. Also like the ability to be able to tow a small trailer or camper behind this. It does have limitations on what you can tow from this, which would be lower than what you could tow directly from your vehicle. Another option might be, depending on your local laws and what else you tow, could be to put this bike rack on the back of what you tow. Based on the solid performance and versatility, this gets the highest rating. However, there are a few things to consider. For security, in other words to prevent your bikes from being stolen, there are a few things to be aware of. You will need a locking hitch pin, where this goes into your vehicle hitch. You will also need a padlock to lock the plates together, since without this, someone could just unscrew the top plate and take all your bikes. Also, it should be noted that the bent bar which holds the bikes up where it meets the bar coming out of the vehicle hitch simply bolts in place. Therefore, someone could theoretically just undo two bolts and take off with all your bikes. You would be left with the steel bar coming out of your hitch. The thief would then have your bikes and the bent bar, though padlocked, they could take this somewhere and cut/drill your padlock. If you are simply stopping to get a bite to eat and park in a visible place, this becomes a less likely scenario, however, if you are say stopping and staying at a hotel overnight, this is something to think about. You might be able to replace a bolt with another locking hitch pin, but I'm not sure if this would effect the tightness and/or stability of this holding your bikes. If you're driving straight through and making just minor pit stops eating, fueling up, etc., this bike rack works great. Haven't tried towing something from it, but don't see any reason it would not work for towing smaller trailers/campers. Great, solid bike rack, with lots of versatility. As far as price and quality/versatility go, this is hard to beat. I would recommend to anyone. I verify all the positives of the other reviews such as holding different types of bikes, etc.

 "Versatile towing rack" 2007-08-06
By tallcoldone (Michigan)
I've had this rack for since 2002 - has worked well for carrying bikes whether towing my +2000-lbs popup camper or not. I've recommended it to friends, and would buy it again.

Don't use the swing-down feature often, as it's pretty heavy if bikes are loaded. The v-cradles for the bikes don't work as well for the oval tubes on some bikes - especially for really "tall" top tubes. I bought a "cheater" tube for adapting troublesome bikes (ladies frame, etc.) to fit the rack.

The three screws to fasten the top plate are a little tedious, but I can clamp it as tight as I want, can accomodate top tubes of varous diameters (the top plate flexes), and I have never seen them loosen even after several hours of highway driving.

Re: earlier comments on chains: I tow with a minivan (towing package including load-leveling). I had to get safety chain extensions so I could tow my popup camper. To kee the chains off the road, I use a bungee cord from the crossing point to the trailer tongue.

 "Works great." 2007-07-30
By J. Havrilla (Lake Orion, MI USA)
Options are limited when looking for a 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack that will also allow for towing. With trailer chain/electrical extensions, this model works well for towing small trailers or a boat.

A bike shop told me the manufacturer claims 300 lbs. tongue weight and 3000 lbs. towing capacity. Haven't attempted that much, probably won't ever need to. (Ended up purchasing through Amazon because it was $60 cheaper!)

Very solid and sturdy. Just returned from 3000 mile trip. No problems. I did add a couple of ratchet tie downs just for my own sake to help with slight sway, but they really aren't necessary.

Note of caution. Design of rack does not work for oval bike frames.
