Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 18 rooftop cargo box, which stores a bunch of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 18 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 18 offers 18 cubic feet of storage space, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat. Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include an extra-stiff lid that vibrates less than other cargo boxes and is easier to open and shut with one hand; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a black matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 18 measures 92 by 36 by 16 inches (L x W x H).

After checking out the Yakima website I selected this cargo box, apparently suitable for the Subaru Outback, but no, it's too long, the hatch scrapes on the box, damaging the car's paintwork, even though the cargo box is mounted as far forward as possible. The cost of shipping prohibits returning this massive cargo box. Aside from being too long the cargo box seems to work well, and is quick and easy to remove and install. If you have an Outack the skybox 16 might be a better option.

Ordered this box for a trip from SoCal to Portland OR area. Box arrived right on time and was very very easy to install on the roof rack. Mounted and installed with the help of my mother (60+) and went on easy and solidly in about 15 minutes. Box is great with the ability to open from either side. We were traveling with a new born and three dogs for a month long trip, so we had a lot of stuff to fit in the box. Easy to load (with a 3 step ladder). Worked great on the road, as I could barely notice the additional weight and wind resistance on the roof. No whistling or wind noise at all from the box. A great box that does exactly what it is designed for - carry a lot of stuff easily!

Shipped fast and is a great buy for the money. saved over 200 buying here. The skybox locks down on my stock GMC Yukon rack easily and is very secure. opens smooth and is pretty sturdy compared to some of the older boxes Ive used in the past. heading out this week on a road trip, but so far very happy with this purchase. fits my 6'8" surfboard just barely at an angle, but it fits and that is the important part. Great features and like I said for the money great buy!

the skybox arrived quickly and was installed in less than 5mn. It's amazing how much stuff can be put in it. It is robust, silent (even at 70+ mph), and I didn't feel any drag or loss of stability with transverse winds. I really like the net and carpet that came with it as they are really useful to maintain kids toys in place, or my climbing gear.
I would recommend it again and again!

Works great on my Tahoe. Glad I did not get the 18 it would have been to big....It is awkward to store on the wall hanger I purchased from Yakima, but other than that it was a good purchase.
