The rack is OK, but I have two problems with it:



1. The design of the hitch mount that lets you use 2" or 1.25" receivers makes the rack cumbersome to install.

2. The rack uses a threaded bolt, instead of a hitch pin, to attach to the receive. The bolt is an odd size, so it is impossible to lock the rack to the receiver.

This is my first bike rack. Immediately, I noticed that it wiggles a little in its harness, but I found out they all most likely wiggle a bit. It holds four bikes which is great and it stores really well as it is a single arm typr, rather than the double arm ones that are so popular. It comes with the handy 1 1/4" to 2" conversion thingy, which is great for sure. I've hauled 4, 3, 2, and 1 bike with it, and they all rode well on the back. It swivels down for easy access to the rear of the vehicle. The only hassle is that the bikes are secured by screwing down two bolts, which takes a bit of time. Some quick release mechanism would be far better and handy. Over all, though, for the money this was a good purchase.

We already owned the Sports Rack from a purchase earlier this year and were happy with it. Needing more room in our roof rack for a Yellowstone trip, I purchased this extension. I was concerned about the additional lenght of the rack and if it would weaken the rack by putting the extension in. I was pleasantly surprised that the rack seemed just as strong and stable. In fact, my 120 lb. son stood in the rack, right in the middle of the extension with no support below it while mounted on my Suburban. While it did flex, it didn't bend or deform and seemed very up to the task.

... it didn't marry easily with it's two ends. Something got lost in the template for it's counterparts resulting in misaligned connecting tubes by 3/8's of an inch. An avoidable, manufacturing quality control issue.



Now, fighting the sturdy and rigid construction of this rack is no easy task. And maybe I was unlucky in this particular item. But I ended up having to use metal files to expand the feeding taper on the "male" end, create a taper on the inside of the "female" end, then soap both surfaces, use a wooden carpenters clamp w/shim for the male side to compensate for uneven pressure, squeeze just till the pipe started to crush then whack the end of the rack with a heavy, soft rubber mallet, then touchup with rustproof flat black and presto! ... an hour later. Also, the air deflector is sub-par-flimsy. Don't over tighten or it may crack, or use it as a template to custom make one from aluminum plate.



Considering the relative higher cost of comparably designed racks, and the undeniable ruggedness of this one, I would have spent at least another $150 or more for a "name" rack. I guess that was worth the hour spent making it work. It looks good and functions well on a 4-Runner.



5 stars for the rack itself, (less one for the unexpected workout).

Bikes sit solidly in the rack supported by the wheels instead of hanging from a single point of contact on the frame. Very easy assembly (only needed a small adjustable wrench). I was a little concerned about lock pins staying in place during travel but have had no problems to date. The pins could be better wired to the rack (stronger wire used). I have cut one of the wires when it got pinched in the pivot point raising the tire holders in the vertical position. The ability to lower or lay down the rack is extremely useful. I highly recommend.

Our last rack was the strap-on kind. It took forever to take on and off and the straps damaged our brake cables and constantly had to be tightened. We changed my wife's station wagon and decided to install a hitch solely for this bike rack. What a good decision!



Expect 30 minutes to put the rack together from the box. The instructions are diagram only, but I didn't find it too difficult. The hardest part of hooking it to your car is wrenching in the bolt which secures the rack to your hitch. It was a little cumbersome as my wife's car is small (1.5" hitch) with not much room to work with, and we didn't have a lug wrench to tighten the bolt. I found that, if you lifted the rack with your left hand to take pressure off the hitch, you could mostly screw in the bolt with your fingers.



Putting the bikes on is very easy. You don't have to lift them more than a foot or so from the ground. The wheels fit right into the easily adjusted wheel wells and an included velcro strap secures them. Another L-shaped bar slides over the top bar of the bike to hold it in place. The center-of-weight of the bikes is very low and that gives more stability than other hitch-mounted racks I have seen. I feel very comfortable going down the interstate with both bikes.



The hitch rack itself folds up and locks in place for storage. The whole system fits nicely in the back of the wagon. There is a plastic adapter for those who need to fit onto a 2" hitch.

I love this rack. You don't have to struggle trying to fit your bike (or bikes) on two poles. Easy on, easy off. And the rack holds the bike(s) very securely. One very, very important thing to remember with this rack; make sure you insert the locking pin that holds the verticle bar in the upright position. If you forget to do this your beloved bike will be securely dragged to death.

The SportRack is more than sturdy enough for my 2 mountain bikes. I like the fact that the bikes are very securely attached (velcro wheel straps and rigid frame hook). The hook is coated with foam, so it won't damage the paint. When hauling the bikes, there is virtually no movement, no rattling and no worry. The adaptable hitch coupler is an awesome feature, allowing the SportRack to fit either the 2" coupler on my Nissan Titan or the 1.25" coupler on my wife's Mountaineer. The need to use a wrench to install is kind of a bummer, but it does force you to tighten the "hitch pin bolt" completely and is the reason the rack is so "secure". Build quality of the rack is top-notch. Everything fits spot-on and all of the features work as advertised.

This lock is just what I needed, it secures my XSport flatbed hitch rack perfectly,

with no modifications. Just replace the pin, lock it, and go. It's well made, sturdy, and easy to use.

After reading on the bike forums how many of these pricey bike racks

are stolen, I started looking for a lock. The XSport rack is configured so that regular rack locks won't fit. Then I read about this lock, but could not find it in stores, not even in our local bike shops. So glad Amazon carries unique items like this!

This locking pin broke the first time I used it to secure my new hitch basket to the hitch post. It worked fine in terms of securing the basket to the vehicle and preventing any rattling. It was also very easy to use. You simply thread the pin into the hole, tighten it down (this prevents any movement of the attached rack or basket) and push the locking side onto the end of the pin. When I got to my destination I pulled on the locking end just on a hunch to test whether or not it was secure, and the locking end pulled off. Now I know I'm not THAT strong, so I unthreaded the pin and pressed the end of the pin back onto the locking end. Again, I was able to pull it off with little effort. I made the return trip home with just the pin holding the basket on the hitch, and it held great. But, if you can't lock it, it defeats the purpose of purchasing this all together. I wrote an e-mail to Lex Crosett at "Racks For All" which was the store that sent the item. Mr. Crosett wrote me back quickly and told me that he would send my a brand new pin. I received the new item a few days later and I sent him the defective one. Great customer service in my opinion. We will have to see how the new one holds up. So far so good with testing the locking mechanism using just my own strength to pull it off.

I purchased this rack from Amazon and it arrived quickly. I first mounted it to the tower on my boat to hold camping gear for a river cruise that we did. It worked great for that. I then purchased the extention and mounted the rack onto my suburban for a Yellowstone camping trip. It worked very well. Assembly was very easy, all of the holes lined up and I had no problems. The Compass has non-adjustable Sport Bars that necessitated making a 4 1/2" extension between the 2 halves to fit properly. If you have adjustable Sport Bars that this Basket is intended to be used on you'll have no problems. I do like the way that the brackets are curved which makes for a better fit when compared to some other baskets. Good product and did the job well!

My only guess is that the manufacturer has made changes since some of the earlier reviews were made. I used this to tie down an Old Town Loon 15t tandem kayak, which is 14'11" long and 30" wide, and I had so much extra strap that I had to tie up the extra so it wouldn't hit the car while I was driving. The front and rear ties would be easier if they were straps instead of ropes, but once again there was more than enough to tie it to my 99 Toyota Sienna. It is true that I couldn't pull my van into the garage without taking them off first, but installation/removal is less than two minutes, so I can't take marks off for that. Once tied down it was obvious that my kayak wasn't going anywhere!

This rack, obviously made by Thule or its manufacturer, is identical in all visible respects to Thule's Model 815 Rack with the exception of the boat straps and the padding on the bars. The mounting system (which is perfect for Thule's rectangular cross-bars and great for round cross-bars) is the same top-notch construction. The bow and stern guy lines are more than adequate if you've perfected your Trucker's Hitch and the padding on the rack is just fine. The only downside is that the buckles on the boat straps are not padded as the Thule straps are. A few bucks to upgrade those and you have a Thule rack set for about 2/3rds the Thule price. Quite a deal in my book and on my boat.

I just bought two pair of these. In my opinion, J style carriers are the only way to load more than one kayak on a car roof. I bought these because they fit on the factory rack of my Toyota Sienna minivan and because they were cheap, at least compared to Yakima. I paid $80 a pair for them. They appear well made and are relatively easy to install on the factory rack after you've done it once. Once strapped up, my kayaks felt very secure. I have only two complaints about them. The ropes provided to secure the front and back of the kayak are not adjustable. Adjustable straps, like those provided to secure the midsection of the kayak, would be much better. Also, the racks have to be removed in order to enter a typical garage. Overall, I am happy with these. If you can afford it however, buy the Yakima bowdown, which can fold down so you can get in the garage. I will probably keep these for use on my Corolla which is small enough that I can get in the garage with them on. I will get the bowdown for my van.

These J-Racks seem to work well. After 1,000 miles of banging around throughout New England these J-Racks have done what they are inteded to do. Why pay more for Thule racks when these are just as good? And since Thule owns SportRack, you really are getting a Thule product without paying extra for the name.



My only complaint lies with the length of the supplied straps - they were about 6 inches too short for my 28" wide kayaks. The straps are equivalent quality to any you'd purchse in the store, they are just too short for wider kayaks.
