After reading the existing reviews on this product I decided to purchase. My alternative was going to be a Thule box, but for the same price as a 13.0 cu.ft. Thule I was able to purchase the SportRack which holds 18.0 cu ft. This is a significant space increase. Delivery took about 7 days due to oversize ground freight (it comes fully assembled in the box... you just have to install the u-bolts during mounting to the car) The initial installation took 25 minutes, but the second time I was able to get it on in about 15 minutes...both times by myself. I drove nearly 2,000 miles and did not notice any difference in how the SUV handled. This was an ideal value purchase for me since I will only use it a few times a year and then store it in my garage. (It was so light, I could lift it into a suspended rack myself in the garage, although it was awkward due to its size, so a partner would make it easier)

We purchased this cargo box in preparation for a trip in our minivan. It was delivered about a week after it was ordered, utilizing the free shipping option. The shipper called the day before delivery to make sure someone would be home to meet them.
The cargo box was attached to the roof of our minivan the evening before we left, in a little over half an hour, without any difficulty. It is fairly lightweight, but the molded plastic is surprisingly sturdy. Once it is closed and locked, it is really solid.
We drove approximately 2,600 miles, and the cargo box did not affect the vehicles performance in the least. Our gas mileage and handling were the same as they are without the cargo box mounted on the roof. The last part of our drive was through a thunderstorm with wind gusts and near torrential rain. There was no leakage into the cargo box at all. We were surprised that 12 days worth of bug buildup on the front of the cargo box had been blasted off during the heavy rain.
I would recommend this cargo box to anyone who needs extra storage space in a vehicle. It may be a good idea to have a step stool to help with access to the box. Also, we packed our luggage so that we had small bags with changes of clothes needed during the drive, but stowed the rest of the luggage in the cargo box so we didn't have to access it until we reached our destinations.

Great value! I can stuff an amazing amount of stuff in there and the price is right. When I called up to order additional spare parts (the last thing you want when you're on the road is to lose a knob) it became clear that SportRack is actually owned by Thule. I asked the rep what the difference between SportRack and Thule was and he said that they're both of very high quality, just that the SportRack only has a one year warranty whereas the Thule has a lifetime warranty. I'm extremely satisfied with our purchase and delivery was lightning fast. I'd buy another one and would recommend it to a friend.

WE JUST TRAVELED 3600 MILES WITH 4 ADULTS AND TWO CHILDREN - WE COULD NOT HAVE MADE IT WITHOUT THIS CARRIER. IT HAS BEEN TOUGH, AND IT LOCKS ! WE PLACED ONLY OUR ITEMS NOT SO NECESSARY INTO THE CARRIER SO WE DIDNT HAVE TO GET WHAT WE NEEDED IMMEDIATELY OUT OF THE TOP OF THE VAN. WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITH THAT MANY PEOPLE IN THE SAME VEHICLE - YOU NEED THE ROOM AND THE SECURITY. WE NOTICED SEVERAL OTHER CARRIERS OF THE SAME SIZE AND SHAPE, AND SEVERAL WERE THE SAME BRAND AS OURS, I DO SUPPOSE IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE NOMINAL PRICE. EVEN IF IT HAD NOT HELD UP SO GOOD, WE COULD AFFORD TO GET ANOTHER ONE FOR THE NEXT TRIP ! BUT IT WILL TRAVEL AGAIN !
OUR ONLY COMPLAINT WAS WE ARE SHORT, AND OUR VAN IS TALL AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET INTO AND OUT OF, BUT WE DID DO OK ! I'D LIKE TO SEE A BRACE TO HOLD IT OPEN FOR LOADING AND UNLOADING?

Drove from Upstate South Carolina to Panama City Florida on top of a Toyota Highlander. No problems at all. The installation can be done by one person and no tools, but can be done in half the time of course with two people. Feels a little flimsy but once installed becomes more sturdy. Only felt it in high winds and remained dry inside after going through some heavy rain. Couldn't tell if it had any affect overall on gas milege. It held more than I thought it would, so I was happy with the capacity. I had two big suitcases, 2 small suitcases, a football chair, two beach chairs, makeup kit (for the wife), and two backpacks. Someone gave us a boogy board for the trip home, it fit as well. Very happy with it, can't wait to use it for camping and beach trips.
