You would think this would fit oversized tires, especially since it's a spare tire mount, but it doesn't nor does it have an extension plate that I can/could find. The plate also fits strangly on to my spare, at a strange angle that give the mount about 20-30 degrees of swival. you'd think it should of been a bit more semetrically applicable for stability. Since I wansn't able to mount it I didn't find out if it would be stable or not but it looked as if with enough jolting (4x4) it would swival to the left and off center the rack. if there were an extension plat I'd give it a 3-star.

Our experience with this bike rack is rather bumpy. But with patience and persistence from Swagman and from eager customers (us) the end result is very good.



We have a Toyota Rav4 2007 and had hard time to find a spare tire mounted bike rack. As far as I know, only Swagman has made special replacement back plate to fit our car and offered it for free when we purchased a Swagman XP 2 Bike Tire Mount from any vendor. We ended up buying from Bike Nashbar via Amazon. When the bike rack (from Bike Nashbar) and the replacement back plate (from Swagman) arrived we found the rack did not have firm contact points on the spare tire as the instructions advised. We contacted Swagman again and they immediately sent two shims that solved the problem. Now we have probably the first working tire mounted bike rack on a Toyota Rav4 2007 in the United States and are very happy. I thank Swagman, especially its knowledgeable and patient contact person, for helping us though.

This bike rack works just fine on my '99 CR-V. It goes on quickly, comes off even quicker and is easy to store. However, any rack that must rely totally on holding onto the spare tire makes me a bit nervous. Would I feel comfomrtable taking two bikes on a long trip? No. But I just use it to take my own bike a few miles from home to the trail now and then. For that sort of use, it is perfect.

I purchased this rack in part because of past experiences with Yakima. The previous trunk mount rack I had from them worked great. The Spare Joe was of similar quality as well and for vehicles that it can be properly mounted to, it appeared to be a very good rack. Unfortunately I was not able to have the rack seat correctly on the spare of my 2005 Jeep Wrangler because of the 3rd brake light. I also have a 30" spare. If a smaller spare was mounted it may work, but I'm not sure. I ended up getting the Thule spare tire rack and am very happy with it. It does not mount around the tire, so the 3rd brake light is not an issue.

A Disappointing purchase that I had to return. Although online readers' commentaries claimed otherwise, this bike rack does NOT fit a Honda CRV 2003. The rack rests too high against the rear window; too high and too close to be able to get the straps behind the spare tire.

I bought the spare Joe last august and i've used it many times since and I can say i'm 90% satisfied considering that there are no other options but to get a roof rack and look as if you are racing in tour-de-france(which is silly for me if i'm going to bike 10 miles from my home).



The problems i faced are similar to the person who posted earlier with a rav4. There is a vital strip that has to pass between the tire and the back door to secure the whole thing to the tire. This takes time as there is a metal bracket behind the tire.But after u get used to it (you need patience, because you are trying to pass a strip through a small hole)it works fine. Again, the strip can pass behind the tire but it takes like 1-2 minutes to get it through. I have two Schwinn bikes and i feel comfortable carrying them together on the rack. There are two exposed bolts on the rack arms from below, be careful not to scrape anything. Also put the heavier bike inside, and put both bicycles in opposite direction so that the front of the first bike meets the back of the other bike. The straps should be very tight and the rack pushed down from the part below the rear wiper as it can seriously damage it if not properly set.

I have an 06 Rav4 which does not allow you to use my old Thule 963 (Thule - 963 - Spare Me - 2 bike spare tire carrier) due to an odd little 'lip' on the spare tire mount. Got this rack instead and it performs as expected. I wouldn't recommend this for any rough offroad conditions though since it can slide around a bit when it gets bumpy.

i guess i am picky but this item doesn't fit well with my 2003 Toyota rav4. i have a big comfy woman's cross roads bike and they do not fit on the bike rack. i did get the adapter and it didn't fit the rack either. second bike is very low to the ground and seem very unsafe to drive with. both poke on the sides of the car. tried it with a simple mountain bike and it worked well with just a common adapter bar. so i guess this rack is not suitable with a woman's bike with the big dip. am still looking for a special adapter bar for that. also, the rack is not straight on the spare tire and seems flimsy to me. will update soon

I bought this for use on our 2001 Chevy Tracker. It was very easy to attach and it fits perfectly over the spare (size P205/75R15). We had to move the bars as we have a side mounted spare and it is factory assembled for a center mount.



The screws stripped quite a bit so if one plans on changing the set-up much, an investment in better quality screws would be a good idea. Otherwise, it looks and feels stable. Haven't as yet put bikes on it but we will be doing so this weekend (surprising our soon-to-be-kindergartner with a new bike). I will update this review after we've used it.



As a side note, this did come with all of the mounts and straps shown.



Update since use. We have used the bike rack several times. Easily mounted and bikes remain secure. Very good mechanism for the price.

I purchased this bike rack for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler with 32x11.5 tires. This fits snuggly on the tire. It should fit 33x12.50 but no larger than that. The front of the rack droops a little with the weight of a beach bike and a mountain bike but it isn't bad at all. I just tightened up the straps. Overall I would rate this 4 stars and would recommend this item.

This bike rack was easy to install (see y-tube video on 'how-to' offset spare tire), no straps flying, secure (locks), stable, bike tires do not extend more a few inches of view (from each side mirror), does not block rear view. I am a female rider, Trek 800-size bike fits great on this rack. Installed this spare tire mount bike rack on a Honda CRV (2006), with offset spare tire - bike is centered on the rear of vehicle, no problem. Great solution to transport bike! Very happy with the added biking adventures -away from home.

We just got our first chance to use the bike carrier and it is a quality product. The bikes stayed put and arrived in great condition. I followed the advice of a previous reviewer who stated that the first bike on should have the front wheel to the side that the spare tire favors. With our Honda CRV, the spare is to the right of center and that is the side for the front bike tire. I would also recommend you use the fabric strap included to secure bicycles. Bungie cords with coated hooks will also work.

I have a Jeep Wrangler and this fit REALLY nicely and took me very little time/detail to install. Always make sure you strap the bike onto the wheel/rack with either the provided or other straps before leaving or it will 'wander' to the back of the rack in high speeds...but it never came off. Worth every penny and beats those 'strap-on' varieties.

Installs in 1 minute! Shipped fast. Fits great (2000 Rav4). Holds my bike and my wifes great. Secure, bikes don't wobble during travel. Only down side is it must be removed during a ride because there is no real way to lock the rack to the car. But, so simple to put on/take off that it just goes inside the truck in seconds. I would recommend it to anyone. Don't spend the $200 for the big brand name racks, this does the job.

This rack got positive reviews and was at a great price, so I chose it over alternatives.



As soon as it arrived, the back of the box clearly identified the vehicles it would and would not work with. Our Suzuki XL7 was one of the vehicles it would not work on. We could have saved a lot of time and Amazon could have saved shipping costs both ways if the product listing included the vehicles it does and does not work on. That's the reason I rated it a 1 star.



I replaced it with a Surco BT300 rack and that worked fine (see my review).

This rack works great for a '98 CRV. I've put two full size adult road bikes on it without any problems. I take the front wheels off, just to ensure that they don't extend further than the right side of the car. My only minor quibble is that this rack doesn't come with any type of lock, but that was a an easy 10 dollar fix.

I was nervous about 2 things before I bought this bike rack. 1. I own a 2005 CRV and I was told I couldn't buy a bike rack for it. 2. Everyone was writing about how lousy the packaging was for this product. I live in a very rural area and if a box was going to get busted up it was surely going to happen coming to my house.

Well, I they were wrong on BOTH counts! I love this bike rack! I can put it on all by myself(no man or engineer needed)! It fits perfectly. My bike is safe and secure. It does not hang out beyond the edge of the vehicle. Do not hesitate buying this if you own a Honda CRV. Also, the box was in perfect condition when delivered.

This rack is light-weight and very easy to install, but I can't get it to fit on my 2008 Rav4 without interfering with the rear wiper. I tried it both with the tire cover on and and with it off. Doesn't fit either way. It seems like a nice product, and it would probably work well on another vehicle.
